How are the current reality and technology changing the design process? Insights by #CreateAsUs Ambassadors.

The broadly defined creative process, in all of its complexity, is affected by many factors. An interesting example was this year's lockdown. How did this peculiar period affect work in the creative industry? We asked the #CreateAsUs Ambassadors for their comments.

#CreateAsUs competition during the pandemic 

Each edition of the project is unique in some way, but it was the twelfth one that was organised in the most exceptional conditions. Before its launch, we asked ourselves: “Can anything positive result from a crisis such as this pandemic?” This was the beginning of something big, something we had never experienced before. The participants were tasked with showing that where limitations arise, real creativity steps in. More specifically, they were to comment on the ‘new reality’ we all found ourselves in by designing laptop stickers in the spirit of the #CreateAsUs campaign in one of the three competition categories: FREEDOM, MULTITASKING, and FUTURE. The number and quality of submissions exceeded our wildest expectations. This prompted us to ask our prominent Ambassadors not only about how technology changes the design process, but also how the environment defines creativity. 

In exceptional circumstances

Multitasking combined with reliability is the direction in which not only the design process but also many aspects of our daily lives are heading. When something unpredictable happens, can you really create something perfect? In short, are there ideal conditions for creating? We asked Michał Dziekan, a #CreateAsUs Ambassador, who had the opportunity to test the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo UX581 laptop, for his opinion: “For me, the perfect moment to create is when I either create for myself, without any restrictions or guidelines, or when the people I work with trust me enough that I can truly feel artistic freedom, which in my opinion is the essence of spontaneity and creativity. The perfect technical process? Working on a large Cintiq tablet. An interesting alternative is working on mobile devices such as WacomCompanion or ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo UX581, which offer a really satisfying feeling of freedom, but it all depends on the project.“ 

Jakiś czas temu miałem mozliwość przetestować #ZenBookProDuoPL, który był do wygrania w konkursie @CreateAsUs.
Dość intrygujący kawał (2,5kg) kompa - mix laptopa do gier (rtx2060,i9, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd), desktopa (raczej musi być pod zasilaczem przy pełnym obciążeniu) sprzętu a'la cintiq (można rysować piórkiem po obu ekranach - górny ekran jakościowo to najwyższa półka) i tabletu (oba ekrany są dotykowe). Osobiście nie byłem w stanie wykorzystać nawet połowy opcji, które oferuje, ale na pewno są ludzie, którzy są w stanie ogarnąć taki kombajn.

The creative process, by definition, should be an emanation of freedom and true self-expression. However, we all know that various types of limitations, requirements and dependencies are at play. Let’s take the example of working from home. This unique time we all came to experience required us to adapt and redefine certain aspects of the process. How does ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo UX581 support creators who use it to create and how important is mobility? Michał Dziekan, a #CreateAsUs Ambassador:
“For me, the creator needs to conform to various limitations, and not so much the technical ones. After all, you can create in different conditions, really, virtually everywhere, using different media, from highly advanced technical desktop or mobile devices, such as the mentioned ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo UX581, to a piece of charcoal you draw with on the wall. The strictest limitations on the creator are imposed by the environment, the society and people the creator cooperates with. Creating without any restrictions means creating in conditions that allow you to be natural and sincere, without any pressure. It seems to me that very few creators truly have such conditions in today's world.”

Zostałem ambasadorem. Co prawda nie w jakimś słonecznym kraju, a akcji @createasus , ale nie mniej to fajne, bo z tej okazji mogłem narysować tribute dla multitasking-zen żony, jako, że bez niej system na kwarantannie by już dawno padł. Gdyby ktoś chciał dodać coś od siebie w temacie kwarantannowego multitaskingu i przy okazji maznąć coś na konkurs to proszę bardzo! Podobnież można wygrać fiata multiplę, rocznik 2001, igła... a nie, jednak organizatorzy mówią, że fiata nie, ale zapewniają, że są inne, nie mniej atrakcyjne nagrody, najlepiej sprawdzić samemu np. na http://createasus.pl/. Ściskałbym mocno, ale wiadomo jak jest, także piątka na odległość i miłego dnia!

To get a bit more context, but also a different perspective, we also asked Taxi Pictures, another #CreateAsUs Ambassador. “Can locking down actually open up?” “In my case, definitely. I have more time for myself, for new thoughts and things to do that I probably wouldn't come up with so easily before. It is also easier to look at things from a different perspective and try new stuff for which we probably would not have had the time or courage ‘in life before the pandemic.’ On the other hand, more time means comfort, which can make others lazy and negatively affect creativity. Lockdown can be a blessing for some and a hazard for others.”

New reality, new possibilities

Extraordinary situations inspire to create unique things. Creativity and design processes have been ‘enriched’, if you like, by something we have paid little attention to, and actually universally considered impossible, like isolation in times of freedom and social distancing. We are all rediscovering the present. How did our next #CreateAsUs Ambassador, Ilona Myszkowska, cope with the pandemic?“Certainly my work was affected by numerous voyages of self-discovery, when in the quiet refuge of my spirit I was looking for shelter from my neighbour upstairs. He was evidently reliving the lockdown stress by turning the floor of his apartment into a large relief with his power drill. That’s the only rational explanation, otherwise I cannot explain why someone would drill so much in the floor.Apart from that, however, the proportions of whining to actual work remained roughly the same, and I kept drawing cartoons and writing a light novel. I also discovered a wild passion for making mushrooms from yarn. Apparently, handicraft calms down and if that’s actually true, then judging by the amount of mushrooms I now own, I must be extremely neurotic.”

The lockdown actually gave rise to a lot of interesting solutions, which there would be no time in for in ‘normal times’, like yarn mushrooms in the case of Ilona. However, we were curious to see the broader perspective, so we asked her about how she creates in these conditions and about her approach to the impact of technology as an ASUS ZenBook Duo UX481 user: “Definitely without lags or endless processing. The work is more pleasant and easier on your nerves. The device is also lighter than my previous laptop and I can carry it around to the various strange places that my artistic soul leads me to (I mean, sometimes I have such a big mess on my desk that I withdraw with work to the balcony or to a cafe, so the mess is no longer an issue #lifehack). The small screen also proves useful, like for the characters' costumes cheat sheet. I also use it for notes on the plot of the novel, for references to drawings or just some Excel spreadsheet. Doing well for myself :D”

Tymczasem tuż przed korona-apokalipsą załapałam się na współpracę z Asus 😃 i do testów taki oto laptop UX481 dostałam. To jest takie stworzenie, które ma dwa ekrany 😮 I touchpad po prawej stronie klawiatury.
"Po co laptopowi dwa ekrany? "- spytasz jeśli jesteś podejrzliwą bułą. No więc póki co odkryłam, że na górnym ekranie można pracować, a na tym dolnym patrzeć jaki jest progress w wiezieniu mojej pizzy na przykład. Albo film jakiś oglądam, a na małym dotykowo sobie mogę 2048 ustawiać. Albo pisać na jednym, a mieć jakieś notatki na drugim - spoko do pisania na mieście, jeśli ktoś lubi takie rzeczy (na chwilę obecną to co najwyżej na balkonie, eh :l). Do tego dolnego ekranu jest też piórko, ale jeszcze się nim za bardzo nie bawiłam. Tak więc laptop pomaga nie wychodzić z domu, tzn. nie wychodzić jeszcze bardziej, niż zwykle. Technicznie też jest fajny, bo ma procesor Intel Core i7, niedorzecznie dużo RAMu i zacny procesor, który lubi szypko 😉.

Dotting the i's and crossing the t's

Whatever stage you are at and no matter how experienced you are, it is worth recalling some basics, because there is always room for improvement. This time we asked another #CreateAsUs Ambassador, Paweł Jaroński, if he has any advice for beginners, but also for those who would welcome a refresher: “I think that staying consistent in what you do is very important, e.g. in publishing your content. Even if at the beginning you just don’t have that reach you’ve dreamt of, don’t focus on that too much but keep believing and be stubborn. It’s worth posting your works wherever you can. There are many Facebook fanpages out there that aggregate content, and will be more than happy to use yours. On the condition that you are properly called out, of course.”

Cześć, radośni ludzie! Wystartowała kolejna edycja #CreateAsUs i kolejny raz jestem ambasadorem konkursu. Do zrobienia jest rysunek digitalowy dotyczący jednej z trzech kategorii. Ja zrobiłem pracę w kategorii FREEDOM. Bo mogłem. Wszystko mogłem, nic nie musiałem. Do zgarnięcia jest m.in. ZenBook Pro Duo, a także hajs. Jest majówka, więc macie czas. No chyba że macie jakieś lepsze plany na majówkę, ale umówmy się. Siadajcie, rysujcie, wysyłajcie! www.createasus.pl

It can be difficult at the beginning, but having the right support, believing you will succeed and taking real action should eventually let you achieve your goal. No matter where you are or what you you’re after: just act. It is also worth mentioning multitasking. We picked Paweł Jaroński’s brain about what multitasking is for him and what it’s like in practice: “At the beginning, you probably don't have the capital to hire employees or outsource certain tasks. And even if you did, you wouldn’t have the experience to make sure you spend this money wisely. You just need that daily grind to later know which areas to outsource, how to control work, etc. You can learn anything!“

The creative process consists of several parts, from inspiration, through finding your ideas, to creation. Where is technology in all of this? When you start spending more time at home, you notice how important equipment appropriate for your needs and the space you’re in is. In exceptional situations such as this one, it becomes not only a window to the world, but also a friend. We asked another #CreateAsUs Ambassador, Karol Banach, about what it’s actually like: “Technology is an integral part of our daily lives. Over the years, humanity has not only been moving forward, and developing new projects, but our ideas are getting bolder. That’s why we need newer and better systems to make the visionary ideas a reality. Designing without technology, in my opinion, does not make the slightest sense. You should take advantage of all the available opportunities that the world of science and technology offers. This will allow you to find the best solutions to tackle the challenges you may face.“

Technology has certainly changed the creative process, but what mark will the current situation leave on the various areas of life? The approach to remote work is likely to change. For many it was unthinkable, but when it actually became a fact, the society coped quite well. We again turned to Karol Banach for his opinion about what we can expect from the future and what place technology will have in it: “I am not up to date with the latest trends in technology, although I think designing in virtual reality has potential, and perhaps this is the path that designers should follow. Virtual world, virtual reality – all this, in my opinion, is now driving new media and maybe in a few years we will wear glasses that augment the surrounding reality and offer a whole lot of new solutions and experiences to users.” 

To sum up,we covered the entire creative process together, because that's what our journey can be called. We considered how to find your place in the new reality, then we commented on the role of technology in the process to conclude with multitasking. Creator, no matter how experienced you are, don't be afraid to ask for support and take advantage of comprehensive solutions.
